I’ve spent the past 16 years within some of companies that sell a lot of the things you buy, and this time of year is crazy for them. Why? Because almost 40% of every dollar spent in the US happens between Nov 1 & Dec 31st.
As a part of my job, I’ve done countless reports, pre & post season analysis, and research to understand how & why people spend their money during this time of year. To say it’s complicated is an understatement; however, one thing is true.
We Americans spend A LOT of $ this time of year.
However, this time of year is really about something different isn’t it?
Unfortunately, the way we engage with each other in this time of giving has been altered by the overarching message of consumption. I’m not sure how that happened, but it’s something that our culture is responsible for…not one person or company alone.
They sell; we buy. If we didn’t buy, they wouldn’t sell. It’s that simple.
Over time, we’ve added labels to describe our perception of its meaning and purpose. Black Friday. Cyber Monday.
This paradigm is important to recognize, because it shifts our focus to what we ‘don’t have’, undermining the truth of who we are.
We all have much to give, because we are already blessed—we simply must allow ourselves to see it.
This season, we are acknowledging that in ourselves, and in you. We are unearthing the true spirit of the giving season.
We CHOOSE to give out of thanks for what we are already given.
We choose authentic Generosity.
So…on Tuesday, November 27, 2012 individuals, non-profits, and businesses are coming together to remember what the giving season is truly about, and giving back.
They are coming up with inspired ideas and big plans to join in Generosity, and you can too.
Generosity is defined as the habit of giving without expecting anything in return.
It can involve offering talents, money or time to aid someone in need. It is this simple and powerful idea that inspired Generous Tuesday.
In acknowledgement that we are blessed, we are participating in Generous Tuesday. Families are planning how they can engage in generosity together. Individuals are rallying their friends to participate. Businesses are finding ways they can give back. Everyone is getting into the true spirit of the season.
It’s about re-framing and re-focusing the Holiday giving season back onto what’s important.
The act of giving without requiring anything in return is a time-honored tradition that powerfully connects us, and changes lives every day.
